Beautiful Northumbria

Beautiful Northumbria
Northumberland is widely considered to be one of the most picturesque areas of countryside in the whole of England. On this tour we discover Catherine Cookson territory, the historic city of Durham, the vibrant city of Newcastle, spectacular Alnwick Castle and its gardens and a visit to Holy Island.

Your Itinerary

Sunday 18th: We depart from home this morning, travelling to Newcastle. After taking a break for lunch we continue our journey, arriving late afternoon at Copthorne Hotel.
Monday 19th: This morning we head for the coast and South Shields, home of the late Catherine Cookson, continuing past Marsden Bay, Whitburn and Seaburn before turning inland across to the ancient and historic City of Durham, acclaimed as a World Heritage Site, dominated by the magnificent Norman Cathedral and Castle, high above the River Wear.
Tuesday 20th: This morning we join the Newcastle ‘Toon Tour’ for a scenic drive around the city with commentary on local history, attractions and points of interest. The rest of the day is free to discover the city at your own leisurely pace.
Wednesday 21st: Today we take the road north, past Blyth and Ashington, to Amble, Warkworth and historic Alnwick. We visit the magnificent Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland, dating back to 1309. The castle has featured in several Harry Potter films and also Downton Abbey. There is much to see, including the sumptuous State Rooms, the beautifully landscaped Alnwick Garden with many unique features, sculptures, the infamous Poison Garden and one of the largest tree houses in the world.
Thursday 22nd: Today’s excursion takes us to the north of Northumberland across the causeway to Holy Island and the mysterious Lindisfarne Castle. We return to Bamburgh, with its mighty castle on the beach, for a break, maybe to visit the majestic castle, or the Grace Darling Museum.
NOTE: The crossing of the causeway to Holy Island is governed by tide times. It may be necessary to amend the timing of this excursion.
Friday 23rd : After breakfast we leave and begin our journey home. Our stop will be in elegant Harrogate with time for a browse and lunch before we continue on home.
