The Heart Of Ireland

The Heart Of Ireland

Explore the Heart of Ireland soaking up the legends, history and culture that capture the spirit of the glorious ‘Emerald Isle’. We visit Galway, with brightly painted houses, cobbled streets and where fiddle music fills the high street. Our tour is based in Athlone, perched on the banks of Ireland’s longest river, the Shannon.

Your Itinerary

Monday 10th: We travel across Anglesey to Holyhead for our crossing to Dublin and then
continue to our hotel for check-in and where we stay for the next four nights.

Tuesday 11th: After breakfast we travel west to the vibrant, colourful city of Galway -
named 2020 European Capital of Culture! Galway is an exciting, lively town with
something to interest everyone – from beautiful colours of its portside houses, to the
infectious rhythms of the traditional Irish music found in almost every pub and bar. Sit and
people watch at the bustling Eyre Square. Marvel at the Spanish Arch and exquisite
Augustinian Church.

Wednesday 12th: Today we travel north and visit the town of Carrick-on-Shannon for free
time before we head to Strokestown Park and the Famine Museum. This grand Georgian
Palladian mansion still features its original furnishings and fabrics, offering a glimpse into
times past. Strokestown Park is also home to the National Famine Museum and acres of
historic gardens and woodlands.

Thursday 13th: Today we have a day at leisure in Athlone exploring the town, which is
home to Sean’s Bar – Ireland’s oldest pub. We will also visit impressive 13th century
Athlone Castle, reopened in 2012 after extensive renovations; today the castle has been
transformed into a multi-sensory experience in which family-friendly multimedia displays
and interactive games guide visitors through its halls. The great Siege of Athlone is relived
in a 360º cinematic experience, transporting visitors to the centre of the 1691 battle.

Friday 14th: After breakfast we return to Dublin city centre for free time for lunch before
our return sailing to Holyhead and home.
