Twixmas in the Scottish Borders

Twixmas in the Scottish Borders

Gretna Green in Dumfries and Galloway is possibly the most romantic place in Scotland, if not in the UK. This small Scottish village has become synonymous with romance and runaway lovers - a favoured wedding venue for eloping couples since 1745! Weddings still take place every day at The Old Blacksmith's Shop. The complex, also houses an exhibition and a sculpture garden.

Your Itinerary

Thursday 27th: We travel north via Lancaster en-route to Gretna and check-in at the
Gretna Hall Hotel. Welcome tea/coffee and mince pie will be served on arrival.

Friday 28th: We leave after breakfast and travel to Jedburgh, The red sandstone abbey
on the banks of the Jed Water was founded in 1138 by David I and was pillaged and rebuilt
many times. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here in 1566, at a house which now tells the
story of her tragic life. We continue to Hawick an interesting and attractive town with an
imposing high street and a spectacular town hall. Why not take advantage of the deals in
the various textile factory shops in the town.

Saturday 29th: Today we take a full day tour to Dumfries and Moffat. Dumfries has lots of
local history besides Burns, including Roman occupation. Find out more at the excellent
Dumfries Museum – where you can also find the camera obscura. The Robert Burns
Centre and the Robert Burns House are good places to learn about Rabbie’s life and work.
Moffat’s wide, tree-lined high street retains many of its original characteristics and the town
has strong connections with both the Moffat and Johnstone clans.

Sunday 30th: We leave after breakfast and return home via Kendal with its quaint cobbled
streets, antique shops, the K Village shopping outlet and the chance to purchase the
famous ‘Kendal Mintcake’. We leave Kendal after lunch for our journey home.

Gretna Hall Hotel***

Situated on 10 acres of landscaped gardens, the 18th century Gretna Hall manor offers both traditional and modern en suite rooms. Full of history, Gretna Hall was built in 1710 and is next to the Blacksmith's Courtyard where many marriages are held.
