Austria – St Anton & The Cows Return

Austria – St Anton & The Cows Return

As summer comes to an end in the picturesque mountains of the Austrian Tyrol traditional festivals take place in towns and villages throughout the region as the cattle are walked back down to the valley after a summer of  razing in the high Alpine meadows. Elaborately and colourfully decorated, their return home is accompanied by  lively traditional festivities celebrated by locals and tourists alike with music and dance as well as stalls selling local food delicacies, artisan goods and hand-made crafts. We visit the Cows Down, ‘Almabtrieb’ as it is known, in the beautiful Tyrolean town of St. Anton.

Your Itinerary

Tuesday 14th: We set off on our journey to Dover for the short sea crossing to Calais and continue to our overnight stay near the French / German border.

Wednesday 15th: Our journey continues as we travel through Germany and on to St.Anton where we arrive at the Sporthotel for the next five nights.

Thursday 16th: This morning is at leisure, a St Anton card will be given which allows free use of cable cars on one day. This afternoon we take a leisurely drive along the scenic Silveretta Pass, towards the summit of the Fluchthon Mountain (3,399 ft) where you can stop for a coffee and a well earned photo opportunity.

Friday 17th: Today we head to Innsbruck, the capital of the Austrian Tyrol, which has many attractions including the old quarter with its cobbled streets where you can stroll round the charming shops and cafes. We begin with a guided morning tour of Innsbruck including views like the Wilten Basillica and the Hofburg Palace.

Saturday 18th: Today is the highlight of our tour as we spend a full day in St Anton attending the ‘Almabtrieb’ festival – a colourful event to celebrate bringing the cows, sheep and goats down from the mountains to shelter from the onset of autumn.

Sunday 19th: After breakfast we make our way to Bregenz, framed by impressive mountain chains and nestled by Lake Constance. There is time to enjoy and explore the medieval centre of the city and see the landmark baroque onion spire of St. Martin’s tower before we journey a short distance around the shores of Lake Constance to the town of Lindau. This historic town is actually an island brimming with medieval and half-timbered buildings.

Monday 20th: Regrettably it is time to leave our picturesque surroundings to commence our homeward journey. We retrace our outward steps travelling north through Germany and into France for our overnight accommodation near the German / French border.

Tuesday 21st: The final part of the homeward journey will take us through France for the short channel crossing back to Dover from where we head for home.

Please note: to enjoy the full benefit of this beautiful region some days are best suited to good weather conditions, and as a result these excursions may be swapped around to alternative days with better weather prospects, this will be left to the drivers discretion.

Sporthotel, St Anton ****

The Sporthotel St. Anton is located in the pedestrian zone in the centre of the town, only a 5-minute walk from the cable cars. It offers great hospitality and very comfortable accommodation. A highlight of any stay here is the fine dining for which they are rightly praised. The hotel has an indoor swimming pool and sauna.
