Bygone Times in South Yorkshire

Bygone Times in South Yorkshire

On this new tour for springtime we feature an interesting and attractive selection of attractions. The thriving historic market town of Newark-on-Trent contrasts nicely with Gainsborough’s Old Hall, and Sheffield offers the visitor much to see. Combined with a stay in a four star hotel this will be an excellent spring break. Hotel in-house entertainment is provided on two evenings.

Your Itinerary

Monday 5th: Depart from your home area travelling to South Yorkshire and arriving late afternoon at Hellaby Hall Hotel. Tea/coffee and biscuits served on arrival.

Tuesday 6th: This morning we head south into Nottinghamshire and the historic market town of Newark-on-Trent. The ruins of the 12th century castle are a landmark, and the market place is surrounded by historic buildings including the Georgian town hall built in 1776, now housing the town museum. Explore the town and enjoy lunch before our afternoon visit to Gainsborough Old Hall, a large, late medieval manor house built around 1460. See the imposing Great Hall, the original kitchen and much more. Famous visitors to the hall have included Richard III and Henry VIII.

Wednesday 7th: Our first visit today is to Sheffield Botanic Gardens and Glass Pavilions a stunning oasis of colour in a peaceful setting. This afternoon we visit unique 18th century Abbeydale Hamlet to hear all about the city’s distant past, with workers houses, waterwheels, workshops and much more. Later we return past Manor Park and the ruins of the castle where Mary Queen of Scots was held.

Thursday 8th: We begin today with a visit to Chesterfield with its busy flea market, with over 100 stalls to wander around. Don’t miss the town’s famous landmark – the crooked spire – how did it happen? This afternoon we enjoy a visit to the stunning and unique Bolsover Castle. Set on a hilltop overlooking the Vale of Scarsdale, the 17th century fantasy castle offers panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. Marvel at the little castle with its brilliantly restored interiors, and afterwards enjoy refreshments in the café before we make our way back to the hotel.

Friday 9th: After breakfast we leave and begin our journey home.
